Whether on your own or with your family, picking at Wilson’s Orchard is a whole body experience. Hear the birds sing, watch the muskrats play, smell the wildflowers. Oh yeah, and pick the best tasting fruit you have ever tried. From August through October, you can find a wide range of apple varieties to choose from. We recommend stopping by the sales barn to sample the varieties ready for picking at the time, then head out into the orchard! In October, we offer pumpkins you can lug up from one of our three patches or choose from a variety at the Retail Barn!
Choose from over 120 varieties of apples at Wilson’s Orchard. You can pick your own fruit or buy them already picked. Our apples range from the classic “antique” varieties enjoyed by Thomas Jefferson to the most recent releases from university fruit breeding programs. Most are great for eating out of hand; some are best for baking or juice.
(Note – ripening times vary from year to year depending on different factors. Our chart is meant to give a rough idea of ripening times for each variety). To learn more about specific apple varieties, click here.
Start your picking adventure in the barn, where you will can sample the apple varieties that are ripe at that time. You can also get a map of the orchard, picking baskets, and advice on where to find the best picking. Once you get into the orchard, you will find each row marked by variety. Pick as much as you want and mix and match as you please. Then bring your apples to the barn for weighing when you check out.
Please Note: Pets are NOT allowed in the orchard.
During the month of October, you will find a variety of pumpkins available at Wilson’s Orchard. Pick your own pumpkins or grab one from the barn already picked – you choose. We have several fields of pumpkins along the creek, with mini-pumpkins, smallish pie pumpkins and the larger jack-o-lantern pumpkins for carving.
A perennial favorite at Wilson’s Orchard is our tractor ride. On weekends, climb aboard our specially-made trailer and take a ride out through the orchard. You’ll travel down the valley, through the creek and out into the orchard. On the way, you’ll hear about what’s ripe, alligators in the creek, Robin Hood’s secret hideout and other near-truths. Once into the orchard, you can get dropped off to pursue your apple picking and either hike back or catch the next trailer. Trailer Rides cost $5.00 per person (4 years old and up), and are completely redeemable in apples. So, if you buy two trailer ride tickets for $10.00, you can receive the same amount back in apples.
